Translation and legalization of documents

Documents and certificates issued by the authorities of the United Republic of Tanzania and intended for use in Italy must first be legalized by the Tanzanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then by the Consular Section of the Embassy of Italy in Dar es Salaam, as Tanzania is not a party to the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents.

To request the legalization of a document and the certification that its translation conforms to the original, applicants must register on the Prenot@mi portal and book an appointment for the relevant service, which is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

On the day of the appointment, applicants must appear in person, or be represented by a duly authorized person, at the Consular Section. They must bring the original foreign-language document, legalized by the Tanzanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with the corresponding Italian translation.

Applicants may authorize another person to carry out these procedures by means of a written authorization, signed by the applicant. The authorization must be accompanied by a copy of the applicant’s identity document, and the authorized person must present their own valid identity document at the appointment.

The Consular Section is solely responsible for certifying that translations of civil status documents and other documents conform to the original. It does not provide translation services, so applicants must arrange the translation themselves.

To assist applicants, a non-exhaustive and non-binding list of translators and interpreters is available Click here. The professionals listed are provided for reference only, and applicants remain free to use other translators or interpreters of their choice. The Embassy accepts no responsibility for the quality of the services provided by the listed professionals, their work, or the fees they charge.

The above services are subject to the payment of the following consular fees, payable in cash in Tanzanian shillings (TZS):

Legalization of documents and signatures – Article 69 of the Table of Consular Fees

Certification that the translation conforms to the original – Article 72(A) of the Table of Consular Fees
