This year Italy returns to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for a fresh three-year mandate. After two terms in the past decade, Italy was reelected last October for the 2019-21 mandate, with the highest number of votes from the WEOG (Western European and Others Group). During its term, Italy will place special attention on several priority issues, including: combating all forms of discrimination, upholding the rights of women and children, the universal moratorium on the death penalty, the freedom of religion or creed and the protection of religious minorities, the protection of cultural and religious heritage, and of the defenders of human rights.
