On September 18th, 2018 Ruggero Macchi, Mayor of the Cles municipality (Northern Italy) and Rashid Hadid Rashid, District Commissioner of Chake Chake, signed in Pemba an agreement of twinship, to increase the sharing of experiences, contacts and good practices among the two communities.
The proximity and the collaboration between the Italian town and the District in Pemba, northeast of the Zanzibar archipelago, comes from the decade-long engagement of the Foundation “Ivo de Carneri”, active in Pemba since 1997 with research projects on tropical and neglected diseases.Ivo de Carneri was a researcher and a physician native of Cles.
The Foundation has realized in 2000, also with funding from the Italian Cooperation, a Laboratory of Public Health, center of reference for the monitoring and the evaluation process of the national plans for the control of endemic illnesses.
Besides, the Foundation covers numerous areas of interest, with projects devoted to the territory, to the formation and the social development, cultivating a constructive dialogue with local political and administrative representatives.
