AICS in Tanzania
The cooperation relations between Italy and Tanzania, formalized in 1965, represent an important pillar in promoting the country’s socioeconomic development. The country’s development agenda is outlined in the ‘National Development Strategy of Tanzania,’ known as the ‘Development Vision 2025′ (TDV 2025), a long-term plan aimed at transforming Tanzania into a middle-income country by 2025, with which Italian cooperation initiatives are aligned.
Currently, cooperation initiatives, formulated, implemented, financed, and monitored through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), cover various areas and involve: local government institutions, actors within the “Italian System” including Italian Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) with a widespread presence in the country, research institutions and universities, and International Organizations.
Ongoing initiatives mainly fall within the realm of basic services, aiming to enhance broader access to essential services for the population, with particular attention to vulnerable groups. This includes a regional initiative for strengthening maternal and child health services, implemented in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in collaboration with Italian CSOs and the Global Health Center of the Tuscany Region, and an initiative to promote the strengthening of the statistical sector, also in collaboration with ISTAT.
In addition, efforts are directed towards enhancing the technical and vocational education sector, with an approach aimed at providing Tanzanian youth with the skills necessary to effectively integrate into the local labor market.
Further ongoing initiatives carried out by CSOs focus on areas such as nutrition, disability, combating HIV, tuberculosis and malaria, vocational training, and workers’ rights, with particular attention to informal labor.
