On November we remember the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the start of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based violence (from today until 10 December), an initiative launched by the United Nations. According to UN Women 243 million women and girls were abused by a close person in this year alone. Only 40% of them sought help. The problem affects Italy as well. The number of women killed in Italy is still too high: 96 victims until mid November, 46% of the total homicides, 75% committed by relatives or partners.
More must be done by all of us, men and women alike. To end the silence, to end the fear. To change the habits and the environment that protect the aggressors and isolate the victims.
Italy, also as member of the European Union, is committed to fight the violence against women and girls This is not a battle fought by women for women only, and men are called upon to contribute actively. Let’s join hands together for a better, more equal and more respectful society.
