UN. Sereni: “The International Criminal Court is a pillar”

Vice Minister Marina Sereni spoke in VTC at the Informal Ministerial Network for the International Criminal Court (ICC), held in the margins of the 75th General Assembly of the United Nations.
The IMN meeting, which is held annually, offers the opportunity to discuss the work of the Court, the cornerstone of the international criminal justice system. This year the discussion focused mainly on the sanctions recently adopted by the United States against the ICC, particularly against Prosecutor Bensouda, and on the initiatives that can be taken in support of the Court’s work.
“Italy – continued Sereni – has been a strong supporter of the ICC since its creation. In recent months, we have observed with great concern frequent political attacks against the Court and its staff. We have a particular responsibility to support the independence and integrity of the Court. A responsibility that can be expressed through public statements of support – such as the one we signed in June, together with 66 other States Parties, and through ‘quiet diplomacy'”.
“The Court is a pillar of the international order, in which Italy firmly believes. Be assured that no effort will be spared on our part to uphold the integrity and independence of the Court,” concluded the Vice Minister.
