You can renew your passport if you are registered in the Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all’Estero (AIRE) in the consular district of Dar es Salaam and your last passport was issued by the Consular Office in Dar es Salaam.

If your last passport was issued by another organization (check page 4 of the passport), before issuing your issue your travel document, the Embassy will have to request specific authorization and proxy for the issue of the passport from the Italian Questura or the Embassy or Consulate of the place where it was issued. It is requested therefore to send in advance by e-mail to cons.dar@esteri.it a scan of the completed application form, of the passport (only page 2 with personal data and page 4 with personal data and page 4 with the specification of the issuing authority), the Tanzanian residence visa, in order to apply for the necessary Nulla Osta.

For information on updating your civil status, please consult this page.

If you are not resident in Tanzania or are not registered with AIRE and need to return to Italy urgently, the Embassy can issue you with an Emergency Travel Document. See the section on Emergency Travel Document (ETD) below.

The procedure for issuing a passport is described in detail on the

Useful information

If your passport is expiring or has already expired, you can ask the Embassy to issue a new passport. You can do this no earlier than six months after the date of expiry of the passport you are in your possession.

If your passport book is damaged, illegible, or no longer has blank pages, you may contact the Embassy to check how to proceed in order to obtain a new passport before the natural expiry date of the one you hold.

If you are planning to travel to a country that requires your passport to have a residual validity of at least six months for entry, it is advisable, in order to avoid unpleasant surprises at the airport on departures or arrivals, to make arrangements in advance and apply for a new passport.

In general, once you have obtained your new passport, you will not have to notify the Tanzanian authorities. However, as a precautionary measure only, we recommend that you take with you on your first

travel outside Tanzanian territory, also your old, cancelled passport with your Tanzanian entry stamp and residence permit.

Regarding your stay in Tanzania we would like to remind you that the Embassy has no competence in the matter of renewing residence permits issued by the Tanzanian government and that it is your responsibility to be in order with the procedures for the renewal of your residence permit.

If you have acquired Italian citizenship in Italy or at another diplomatic/consular representation and you wish to apply for your first passport, it is necessary that you also present us with a document proving the conferment of citizenship (certificate of citizenship/corresponding copy of the swearing-in protocol).
